| All about L.H. Gray & Son and Gray Ridge Egg Farms |
The Gray Ridge Egg Farm history began with young Lyle Gray grading the
family's eggs in the basement of his parent's farmhouse in Palmyra,
a small farming community in Kent County, Ontario. |
|
| Modest Beginnings |
|
In
1934, Lyle and his wife, Ina, moved to Ridgetown, just 9 miles from Palmyra,
and established an egg grading station. Ridgetown was a thriving agricultural
community and the Gray’s egg grading business was now the fifth in the
town. Competition was fierce, but Lyle and Ina were determined to build a successful
business.
As the Gray’s business thrived, their son Bill joined them and L.H.
Gray and Son was established. |
| Proud Memories |
During
the Second World War, the Gray’s proudly supported the war effort by shipping
eggs from Ridgetown to Great Britain. The eggs left the grading station in refrigerated
rail cars and were transferred to transport ships in Halifax, Nova Scotia or
Saint John, New Brunswick.
Stringent quality requirements developed by the Federal
Government and a Canada stamp on each egg set these eggs apart from the rest
and established their reputation as being second to none around the world.
This
superior quality reputation remains today as these strict requirements continue
to be updated and enforced. |
| Determination and Growth |
By
1969, the determination of the Gray family paid off as L.H. Gray & Son was
the only grading station operating in Ridgetown.
In 1972, an egg grading facility was established in Moorefield, Ontario and
in 1977 a third station was established in Strathroy, Ontario.
Continued growth of the Ontario egg industry and equipment modernization eventually
led to the closing of the Ridgetown and Moorefield stations and, in 1992, a new
plant was built in Listowel to replace them.
|
| Today |
L.H. Gray & Son is still a family run business
with William Gray as President.
Egg production remains an essential
part of the business and L.H. Gray & Son has farms in Chatham-Kent, Wellington
and Dundas counties.
L.H.
Gray/Gray Ridge Egg Farms currently operates two of Canada’s most modern
egg grading and packing facilities, one in Strathroy (Head Office) and the other

egg production practices and a dedication to providing products that meet the
diverse needs of today’s consumers, Gray Ridge markets regular and specialty
